Is Education Administration Right for You?

Education administrators perform similar duties to that of a CEO or a top manager. Their duties include providing direction and leadership for their educational institution; supervising teachers, staff, counselors and other employees; reviewing and developing new academic programs; preparing budgets; and managing the day-to-day operations of their school.

School administrators, such as principals, vice-principals and superintendents, set educational standards and establish the policies and procedures to carry them out. Principals manage individual schools and superintendents manage schools at the district level. Most states require principals to be licensed as school administrators.

Education Administration Credential Requirements

Education administration degree programs include courses in school management, school law, school finance and budgeting, curriculum development and evaluation, research design and data analysis, community relations, politics in education, counseling, and leadership. Educational supervision degree programs include courses in supervision of instruction and curriculum, human relations, curriculum development, research and advanced pedagogy courses.

Most education administrators begin their careers in related occupations, and prepare for a job in education administration by completing a master's or doctoral degree.
