Teaching Credentials

Multiple Subject Credential

The 2042 Multiple Subject teaching credential authorizes the holder to teach all students including English learners in a self-contained classroom, K-12; it is the credential sought by those who wish to teach elementary school (K-6).

Single Subject Credential

The 2042 Single Subject teaching credential authorizes the holder to teach a special subject in a departmentalized classroom, such as Math or English, at the middle school or high school level.

Education Specialist (Special Education) Credentials (Level I and II) - Mild/Moderate and/or Moderate/Severe

The Education Specialist teaching credential authorizes the holder to teach students with special needs in special day classes or to work with general education teachers to fully include students in general education classrooms. In addition, these credentials allow the holder to work as a resource teacher. The Education Specialist credential (Level I) may be combined with either the Multiple Subject or Single Subject credential programs. We also offer the Level II Education Specialist credential.

Ryan/1059 Professional Clear Credential

For candidates who have completed a Ryan or 1059 preliminary credential, the professional clear credential program provides an opportunity to earn a professional clear credential.

Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies - Multiple Subjects Teaching

Liberal studies is the major of choice for the individual wanting to teach in an elementary classroom or for those seeking an interdisciplinary degree.

Students are exposed to a comprehensive range of academic subjects and disciplines, including those subjects most commonly taught in California elementary schools. Major coursework allows for a personalized selection of emphasis areas to enhance individual career growth and is designed to prepare students for a teacher credential or for graduate studies.

Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Development

The early childhood development program focuses on cross-discipline course work in human development, education and early childhood. The program includes both theoretical and practical applications as students explore the cultural and social influences of the family and the community in the holistic development of young children.

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Special Education

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is targeted to individuals who wish to begin their teaching careers with both a teaching credential and a master's degree. Major themes found in both the credential and advanced core courses include teacher as constructivist, nurturer, moral educator, reflective practitioner, mediator of diversity and change agent. The MAT includes 12 additional units beyond the core credential course work, focusing on theory, research and seminar courses. A candidate conducts an action research project, writes about the project and makes a presentation as demonstration of mastery.

Administrative Services Credential (Preliminary Tier I and Professional Tier II)

The Administrative Services Credential (both Preliminary Tier I and Professional Tier II) is designed to prepare, support and mentor educational leaders. The programs prepare candidates to research, understand and actively link five core values of care, competence, inquiry, social justice and affirmation of diversity to personal and professional knowledge, issues of leadership and management and the systemic building of a democratic community of lifelong learners.

Master of Arts in Educational Leadership & Administration w/ Admin Tier 1 Credential

The MA in Educational Leadership and Administration program helps develop and enhance your dynamic, high-performing administrative leadership skills for the renewal and improvement of schools and school systems. The curriculum focuses on leadership models, supervision of personnel, implementation of policy, and the legal and social issues that affect the school system.

Master of Arts in Education

The goal of the MAE program is the development of knowledgeable, thoughtful and ethical educator/citizens committed to the universal values of democracy, care and justice. The program is designed for individuals seeking a career or advancement opportunities in education as a teacher or administrator.

MA in Special Education

The Master of Arts in Special Education is designed primarily for individuals seeking a career or advancement opportunities in special education; however, this degree does not meet the requirements for its holder to teach in California public schools. The goal of this program is to develop change agents in the field of Special Education who have an advanced understanding of research and issues related to curriculum and inclusions. Candidates should know and understand current best practices in the field.
