Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies - Multiple Subjects TeachingBack to topLiberal studies is the major of choice for the individual wanting to teach in an elementary classroom or for those seeking an interdisciplinary degree. Students are exposed to a comprehensive range of academic subjects and disciplines, including those subjects most commonly taught in California elementary schools. Major coursework allows for a personalized selection of emphasis areas to enhance individual career growth and is designed to prepare students for a teacher credential or for graduate studies. Teaching CredentialsBack to topMultiple Subject CredentialThe 2042 Multiple Subject teaching credential authorizes the holder to teach all students including English learners in a self-contained classroom, K-12; it is the credential sought by those who wish to teach elementary school (K-6). Single Subject CredentialThe 2042 Single Subject teaching credential authorizes the holder to teach a special subject in a departmentalized classroom, such as Math or English at the middle school or high school level. Ryan/1059 Professional Clear CredentialBack to topFor candidates who have completed a Ryan or 1059 preliminary credential, the professional clear credential program provides an opportunity to earn a professional clear credential. The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is targeted to individuals who wish to begin their teaching careers with both a teaching credential and a master's degree. Major themes found in both the credential and advanced core courses include teacher as constructivist, nurturer, moral educator, reflective practitioner, mediator of diversity and change agent. The MAT includes 12 additional units beyond the core credential course work, focusing on theory, research and seminar courses. A candidate conducts an action research project, writes about the project and makes a presentation as demonstration of mastery. Administrative Services Credential (Preliminary Tier I)Back to topThe Administrative Services Credential (Preliminary Tier I) is designed to prepare, support and mentor educational leaders. The program prepares candidates to research, understand and actively link five core values of care, competence, inquiry, social justice and affirmation of diversity to personal and professional knowledge, issues of leadership and management and the systemic building of a democratic community of lifelong learners.
