Early Childhood Education - Associate's

The mission of the Andover College Early Childhood Program is to provide students an education that will prepare them to work either directly with young children and their families, or in related service and programs. Students who successfully complete the degree program will have demonstrated the knowledge, ethics and skills as listed below:

  • A thorough understanding of developmentally appropriate practices as set by the NAEYC.
  • The ability to recognize ethical and unethical practices in the field of early childhood as set by the NAEYC.
  • The ability to advocate for ethical practices in all early childhood settings.
  • Students will be skilled at writing and presenting, both theory and best practices, in the field of early childhood.
  • Students will be prepared to interview for positions in the field of early childhood.
  • Students will have experiences in a variety of early childhood settings including special needs, public schools and child care centers.
  • Students will be skilled at recognizing the developmental stages.
  • Students will have a sound understanding of the value of play in the development of the young child.

Program Objectives:

  • To offer students a program that is regularly assessed and updated in order to maintain standards that meet the needs of the early childhood field.
  • To provide a learning environment that uses traditional and innovative instructional methods.
  • To provide the students with the opportunity to broaden their awareness and understanding of the diverse needs of families.
  • To promote a student-centered learning environment in which faculty and staff are accessible and supportive of their individual needs.
  • To develop and maintain educational partnerships with early childhood settings throughout the local area, which will provide opportunities for practicum experience.
  • To provide the students with an accessible library collection and learning resources, and the skills to utilize them.
  • To provide the students with the opportunity to do community service work.

Early Childhood Education - Certificate

The Early Childhood Education Certificate program is designed for students who already have education and/or experience in the field, as well as those students who are new to the field. Students are required to take 18 credit hours of core early childhood education courses.
