Some campuses offer a combined campus-based and online learning format. While widely available, not all learning formats are offered at all locations.

Campus-Based Learning Format

Providing the convenience of attending classes near your home or workplace.

  • Attend class just once a week. Classes are offered in the evening or on weekends. Some campuses offer day classes.
  • Complete homework assignments on your own, as well as with your learning team.

Online Learning Format

Providing the flexibility of a 100% online education.

  • Complete coursework through electronic forums
  • Download lectures and assignments from your student website and study them at your convenience.
  • Login to class at least four days per week for University of Phoenix or three days per week for Axia College of University of Phoenix. You choose the days and times.

Master of Arts in Education

The Master of Arts in Education program is designed to meet the specific needs of educators through a variety of specializations. Each area of specialization offers courses developed to meet state licensing and content standards and to enhance and refine the skills of the individual whether an administrator, counselor or classroom teacher. Specializations offered vary by region.

Administration and Supervision

The Master of Arts in Education degree program with a specialization in Administration and Supervision is designed for educators interested in gaining knowledge and expertise in the area of school administration. The program curriculum is focused on education finance, school law, the roles and responsibilities of the principal, community relations, and supervision of personnel. The degree program also includes an internship experience in school administration at the principal level and a research component and requires an Action Research Project.

Adult Education and Training

The Master of Arts/Adult Education and Training Program (MAED/AET) is a 35-credit program of study designed for individuals who wish to develop the skills to work with adult learners in areas such as corporate training, community college instruction, non-profit and community based organizations, human services agencies, or professional development. The program encompasses knowledge of andragogical theory, the needs of diverse learners, critical issues and trends in adult education and training, instructional design and strategies, the use of technologies, and assessment. It also provides courses that address coaching and mentoring, e-learning, and e-learning web design technologies.

Curriculum and Instruction

The Curriculum and Instruction Program is a graduate degree for bachelor prepared individuals who wish to develop and enhance their curriculum and instruction repertoire for the purposes of increasing student learning. The program encompasses the study of curricular planning and development with an integration of technology, assessment and evaluation practices, strategies for effective classroom instruction for a variety of learners and critical issues within the field of education.

The Computer Education specialization focuses on using computers and how computers fit in education.

Early Childhood Education

The Master of Arts in Education with a specialization in Early Childhood Education is a graduate degree for educators seeking knowledge and expertise in the field of early childhood development and teaching. The curriculum includes instructional strategies, teaching methodologies, assessment techniques, theories of early childhood growth and development, and the impact of family and cultural diversity on early childhood.

Elementary Teacher Education

The Master of Arts in Education/Elementary Teacher Education (MAED/TED-E) is a graduate degree program preparing candidates for teacher licensure. The guiding philosophy of the MAED/TED-E program is to provide the adult student, who already has a degree in a discipline other than education, with the skills and knowledge that will allow them to become a competent and effective educator. This program focuses on elementary student learning by improving the educator's responsibility for that learning.

Secondary Teacher Education

The Master of Arts in Education/Secondary Teacher Education (MAED/TED-S) is a graduate degree program preparing candidates for teacher licensure. The guiding philosophy of the MAED/TED-S program is to provide the adult student, who already has a degree in a discipline other than education, with the skills and knowledge that will allow them to become a competent and effective educator. This program focuses on secondary student learning by improving the educator's responsibility for that learning.

Teacher Leadership

The Master of Arts in Education program with a specialization in Teacher Leadership is intended for P-12 teachers who define themselves as learners, teachers, and leaders. Teachers become servant leaders who empower themselves and others to directly impact school culture as champions of innovation and facilitators of school improvement, professional development, and student achievement. The program provides advanced knowledge in collaboration, coaching and mentoring, decision making, planning, action research, and evaluation. Graduates will be able to serve their students, colleagues, and communities as ethical leaders committed to excellence.

California Teachers of English Language Certificate

This program is available only for individuals with a California teaching credential. It fulfills requirements for the Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) certificate. Consisting of four six-week courses, the curriculum has been designed around the Candidate Competency Standards set forth by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Learners enrolled in this program gain a depth of knowledge regarding current theories and research in the specialized instruction of English-language development. They will develop a foundation for understanding cultural differences among English learners–-and how those differences relate to academic achievement in a culturally inclusive environment. Language structure and use, and first- and second-language development is investigated. Throughout the program, strategies for instruction and assessment of a linguistically diverse student body are addressed.

The College of Education at the University of Phoenix offers over 80 individual professional growth courses in areas such as technology, special education, reading, math, middle school, administration and early childhood. Some of these graduate level courses may lead to endorsement in a specialty area such as bilingual education or reading.
