About Ottawa University

Ottawa University is a not-for-profit, comprehensive 4-year liberal arts and professional studies university. Founded in 1865, Ottawa University has a residential campus in Ottawa, Kansas, and adult education campuses in Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri and Wisconsin, as well as multiple instructional sites. Online studies are also offered.

Ottawa University offers a variety of bachelor's degree programs, degree completion, and graduate programs through online and classroom-based program offerings.

In Arizona, Ottawa University features bachelor's degree majors in more than 17 disciplines including English, history, education, psychology, human services, health care management and business. An MBA and Master of Arts programs in human resources, professional counseling and education are also available.

Master of Arts in Education

The Master of Arts in Education is a 36 semester credit hour program. Additionally, graduate level courses may be applicable toward an advanced post master's program such as the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS) in community college counseling, early childhood education, education leadership, education intervention, school guidance counseling and special education.

The program has been created to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to:

  • Improve and enhance their teaching and services to students
  • Provide their students with an enhanced learning environment
  • Prepare and plan for change in the schools
  • Assist schools and the community to improve education for all students
  • Assess outcomes of school curricula, programs, services and activities

Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education

This program is designed to meet the new Arizona State requirements that all teachers must be highly qualified in Early Childhood if they are going to teach students birth through eight years old. These certification requirements need to be met by 2009.

Programs included in the communications degree include:

The elementary education major (K-6 licensure) at Ottawa University provides the knowledge, social competencies, methods and communication skills necessary to become an effective teacher. In addition to methods and professional education coursework, you will also need to have field experience and meet observation requirements. You must also demonstrate ability in liberal arts areas including mathematics, science, writing, communication and the fine arts.

Ottawa University's elementary education major is based on state, regional and national certification/licensure criteria and competencies. It is accredited by the State of Arizona.

The secondary education program at Ottawa University combines the teaching and learning methods with content area knowledge to become effective teachers. Students interested in secondary education can choose from content areas in biology, business administration, English, history and math. Your advisor can also discuss other areas that may be available.

Ottawa University's education major is based on state, regional and national certification criteria and competencies. It is approved in the state of Arizona. As a graduate, you are eligible to take the State of Arizona competency exams associated with your area of certification.

If you hold a baccalaureate or advanced degree from an accredited university and would like to become certified to teach in Arizona schools, Ottawa University offers a teacher certification program for you. This program is designed to meet the requirements set forth by the Arizona Department of Education for public school teaching. The teacher certification program provides the necessary training, course work and expertise needed to acquire a teaching certificate in elementary education (grades K-8) or secondary education (grades 7-12). The program of study prepares the candidate for successful completion of the state prescribed pre-certification performance tests and a successful career as a certified teacher.

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies

Ottawa University offers Certificates of Graduate Studies (CGS) and Certificates of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS). The CGS is a certificate that can be earned concurrently with a master's degree or without a master's degree. The CAGS is designed for professionals who have already earned a master's degree or its equivalent from a regionally accredited school and are seeking additional professional training. The CAGS is awarded upon the completion of a minimum of 15 semester credit hours of approved coursework. Concentrations are available in these areas:

  • Educational leadership
  • Special education
