Early Childhood EducationBack to topThe early childhood education (ECE) program provides an excellent introduction to a rewarding career in childcare. Students learn various teaching strategies involving math, music, science, play and arts and crafts. Additionally, they study interpersonal communications, childhood development, behavior management and program planning. ECE training includes First Aid and CPR certification as well. After completion of the course work, graduates must gain an additional 500 hours of field experience required for licensing from the British Columbia Ministry of Children and Family Development. Duration:43 weeks (including 2 weeks observation and 8 weeks of practicum) Early Childhood Education: Infant, Toddler and Special NeedsBack to topOnly certified practitioners or candidates in the process of completing the required 500 hours of work experience can enroll in the ECE - Infant, Toddler and Special Needs program. Students have the option to select full-time and part-time studies. Full-time classes run five days per week. Part-time classes take place two or four evenings per week to allow students to work full-time and upgrade their skills. Students choose an area of specialization and complete the required 5 courses and practicum to qualify for License to Practice as a Special Needs Educator or a License to Practice as an Infant/Toddler Educator. Teaching English as a Second LanguageBack to topIn this program, TESL students develop practical teaching abilities and a thorough understanding of ESL teaching methods. They learn to create learner-centered lessons, manage classes and evaluate learners. They also gain real classroom experience in a supervised practicum component. Though not an admission requirement, students should have completed, or be near completion of a bachelor's degree.
