Early Childhood Education Associate's Degree
Turn your love for children into a rewarding career in the
rapidly expanding child care profession. The Minnesota Workforce
Center projects a 32% increase in the number of child care
professionals needed statewide through the year 2008.
Classroom instruction is supported by a hands-on externship at a
licensed child care center for 30 hours per week. You'll have the
opportunity to earn while you learn. If you currently work at a
child care center, we'll work with your employer to arrange an
externship. If you're not currently in a center, we'll help you
find a position.
The Associate's program in Early Childhood Education offers the
following areas of emphasis:
Child Development
The earliest years in a child's life are some of the most
important. During this time, skilled teachers promote the
social, emotional, physical and cognitive development that
forms the foundation for a child's health and well being. Once
you earn your Degree in Early Childhood Education, you will be
prepared to facilitate discussions and learning within a
classroom. Your Child Development Specialization will teach you
to provide young children with the kinds of experiences that
advance their development.
As one of their first teachers, you will be a model, coach, and
guide for young children. Using your knowledge of child
development to help a child grow and learn can be very
rewarding. Start making a difference in the lives of young
children today and earn your Associate's Degree in Early
Childhood Education.
Child with Special Needs
The AS in ECE with a Child with Special Needs Specialization is
designed to prepare teachers with the skills to effectively
care for and educate children and families with special needs.
All children enter the early childhood classroom with a variety
of needs and abilities. Our goal is to help teachers develop
inclusive classrooms with both children with special needs and
typically developing children. Young children with special
needs can have more opportunities for success when supported by
an informed early childhood teacher.
English Language Learner
The AS in ECE with ELL specialization is designed to prepare
teachers with knowledge and strategies to support young
children in the process of learning English. A recent and
significant change in school populations has prompted teachers
to reach out to young ELL's through teacher development. Our
philosophy is built upon teaching young children to maintain
their native language and culture while helping them to gain
skills through instruction in English. Young children will
reach their full potential in today's education environment
when matched with a teacher prepared to help them become
competent English speakers.
Family and Child Studies
The AS in ECE with a Family and Child Studies Specialization is
designed to prepare teachers with the skills to support the
healthy development of young children and families. Teachers
will be skilled in providing parent education, support for
children who demonstrate challenging behaviors, and knowledge
of early childhood development to meet the mental health needs
of young children and their families. Skilled teachers who
support the development of strong, healthy children and
families also contribute to a strong, healthy community.
