Certificate - Reading

The Reading Certificate Program is designed to help credentialed
teachers meet local, state, and federal requirements that ensure
that all pupils have fair access to high-quality education with a
foundation in reading. The Commission on Teacher Credentialing
(CTC) serves as the approving agency and issuer of the Reading
Certificate.
The Reading Certificate Program represents the first half of the
courses required to obtain the CTC-approved Reading and Language
Arts Specialist Credential.
Requirements to begin the Reading Certificate Program:
- Possess a valid California teaching credential
- Complete a minimum of three years of full-time service in
public schools or private schools at the time of recommendation
for the Reading Certificate
- Pass the CBEST
Certificate - Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)

UC Irvine Extension's Teaching English as a Second Language
(TESL) Certificate provides you with the most up-to-date
knowledge and practical skills you'll need to be an effective ESL
teacher. Created and taught by experts in the field, the UC
Irvine Extension TESL program has an excellent reputation
worldwide and will open the door for you to teach in a variety of
settings.
TESL Certificate holders have found teaching opportunities with
intensive English language programs, adult schools, community
colleges, private ESL schools, corporations, and overseas English
schools. Many employers require only a TESL Certificate and a
bachelor's degree.
In most cases, a teaching credential issued by the Commission on
Teacher Credentialing (CTC) is required by the K-12 public
schools.
Administrative Services Credential (ASC) Tier 1

Offered jointly by the University of California, Irvine and UC
Irvine Extension and approved by the California Commission on
Teacher Credentialing.
This credential authorizes the holder to provide administrative
services for grades K-12 including:
- The development and assessment of instructional programs
- The management of school site, district, or county fiscal
services; hiring, assigning, supervising, and evaluating
certificated and classified personnel
- Providing discipline to students and employees
- Development of student support services
Who Should Enroll
In preparation for this program, you should:
- Possess a valid California teaching credential or services
credential
- Complete a minimum of three years of full-time service in
public schools or private schools at the time of recommendation
for the Tier I credential
- Pass the CBEST
Comprehensive Exam
The Tier I ASC program culminates with a comprehensive
examination based on the major issues covered in the curriculum
of the program. This is a take-home, open-book, open-note
examination that is taken after all coursework has been
completed. Each instructor provides one or two essay questions
from each course. This is a pass/fail exam administered and
evaluated by the program director, Dennis Evans. There are no
additional fees for this exam.

The Tier II, or Professional Administrative Services Credential,
is designed for full-time school administrators who hold the Tier
I Preliminary Administrative Services Credential and now need to
clear that preliminary credential by obtaining the Tier II
Professional Administrative Services Credential.
The Tier II Credential provides focused, reflective,
assessment-based professional development for school
administrators, enabling them to effectively address the
challenges of educational leadership in diverse settings.
Analysis, research, and evaluation comprise an individual
induction plan for the practicing administrator, as required by
the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).
The Tier II Credential is offered jointly by UC Irvine Extension
and Department of Education and is approved by the CTC.
Requirements to obtain the Tier II Credential through UC Irvine
- Possess a valid Tier I (Preliminary Administrative Services)
Credential
- Complete a minimum of two years of successful full-time
employment in a private or public school in a position requiring
the Tier I Credential (as verified by employing school or
district).
- Provide verification that you have passed the CBEST
- Obtain a grade of B or better in Education XI398A (Induction)
and Education XI398B (Final Evaluation)
