MA in Education

The Master of Arts in Education is a research-oriented degree that prepares you to work in a variety of academic settings and sets the stage for a doctorate. Its emphasis on professional writing, research and theory distinguishes it from the Master of Arts in Teaching, which focuses primarily on classroom practices.

Three emphases are offered:

  • Teaching
  • Faith-based issues
  • Personalized

The teaching emphasis is meant for new teachers who need to earn a clear credential. The faith-based issues and personalized emphases are ideal for seasoned educators looking for a program that can be customized to their diverse interests.

MA in Teaching

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is a practitioner's degree, designed to give you the advanced skills and understanding for classroom application. The MAT focuses on classroom practices, such as classroom management, and is designed primarily for students with a bachelor's degree who desire to earn either a single-subject or multiple-subject teaching credential while working towards a master's degree. Students may also earn the MAT without the credential if they enter with teaching experience.

Teaching Credentials Certificates

Biola's School of Education enables you to quickly and conveniently earn a preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential to teach in elementary school or a preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential to teach in junior high or high school.

Credentials can be earned through the traditional route, which involves fieldwork and student teaching, or through student teaching under contract, which requires your employment in a WASC-accredited private school.
