The School of EducationSince its inception in 1972, the School of Education has demonstrated its commitment to prepare education and community leaders whose background and interests are reflective of, and responsive to, the cultural diversity of today's world. It particularly prepares students to serve as teachers, curriculum developers and supervisors, administrators, higher education personnel, counselors, therapists, psychologists, private consultants, and as business managers and trainers. MA and EdD in Catholic Educational LeadershipBack to topThe aims of the Catholic Educational Leadership Department are threefold: to offer a scholarly educational program for Catholic school personnel, to build a sense of community among students and faculty, and to prepare a corps of highly competent and knowledgeable educators for Catholic schools. MA in Counseling Psychology - Emphasis in Marriage and Family TherapyBack to topIn the Marriage and Family Therapy program, students learn theories and effective practices for working with individuals (children, adolescents, young adults, midlife adults and older adults) and their families in a variety of community mental health, school and work settings. The 49-semester unit program provides education and training consistent with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences' (BBS) educational requirements for Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) licensing and the National Board for Certified Counselors' (NBCC) educational requirements for general certification. The program also is consistent with the broad standard of training within the field of marital and family therapy. USF's Marriage & Family Therapy program is offered in San Francisco and at regional campuses in Santa Rosa, San Ramon, Sacramento and Cupertino. MA in Digital Media and LearningBack to topThe Master of Arts in Digital Media and Learning prepares well-rounded specialists who plan, coordinate, design and implement technology based learning solutions. State-of-the-art courses combine theory, hands-on experience and practical fieldwork opportunities. Core courses focus on fundamental skill development, curriculum integration, learning theories and leadership skills. By program end, the student will have accumulated a portfolio of course and project products in the form of disk, CD-ROM or web media. MA and EdD in International and Multicultural EducationBack to topThe programs in this area are designed for full-time working professionals seeking to enhance their professional knowledge and understanding of diverse groups and improve skills in human rights education, cross-cultural communication, bilingual education, and second/modern language acquisition. The programs focus on educational issues with specific concern for the socio-cultural needs of our multifaceted, democratic society and education for inclusion. They further seek to promote recognition and respect for the diversity extant in our democratic society. MA and EdD in Learning and Instruction (includes Special Education)Back to topThe MA program focuses on Special Education and leads to a Mild/Moderate Education Specialist credential. Students participate in an internship that allows them to teach full time while pursuing the credential and MA. The doctoral program emphasizes theories of learning, teaching and instruction that inform educational practices in a variety of settings. Graduates of the program apply their skills to conducting research, evaluating programs, designing instruction and solving learning-based problems. Both of these programs share the conviction that instructional decisions must be grounded in the best social science evidence available at the time. Thus, the overriding goal of both programs is to prepare our graduates to contribute to and make use of the ever changing knowledge base in learning and instruction. MA and EdD in Organization and LeadershipBack to topThe various organization and leadership program and emphasis opportunities prepare students to work as leaders in education, business, government, health care and social agencies in domestic and international settings. In addition to the general program, both MA and EdD students may select or combine one or more of the following emphases:
MA in School CounselingBack to topThe school counseling program emphasizes cognitive behavioral and humanistic theories of counseling and teaches pragmatic, problem solving interventions with youth in schools. A particular focus of the curriculum is the enhancement of multicultural youth development and empowerment, and a commitment to the quality school movement which fosters learning conditions that maximize intellectual development and creativity, respectful relationships, and self-directed learning. Courses are designed with a practical orientation and are taught in a workshop format, emphasizing application of theory and development of skills. Students begin their fieldwork in the schools during a first semester practicum class and complete the fieldwork requirements during four semesters of fieldwork classes. The fieldwork class each semester is conducted under the supervision of a PPS credentialed instructor. Teaching Credential with Master's Degree (TESL, Reading & More)Back to topThe teacher education program reflects a special focus on philosophical inquiry, social justice and concern for individual differences in the development of children.
