The University of Cincinnati's Master of Education in curriculum & instruction online program connects working educators with a dynamic community of dedicated professors, accessible research, and a devoted student support team. The University has gained a notable reputation for its outstanding faculty, research, novel curriculum, program accreditations, and competitive tuition and is regionally and NCATE* accredited. Students can choose from four convenient start dates, receive relevant and comprehensive cohort-based curriculum, graduate in as little as two years with 45 quarter credit hours all while never stepping foot on a campus.

The General Studies concentration allows individuals to seek their master's degree while enhancing their own knowledge and understanding of the American education system. Teachers gain the components of politics, economics, and research while elevating their role as knowledge generators and creators of the classroom. Additionally, the General Studies program prepares teachers to make positive changes in their classrooms, schools, and communities.

The following specializations are offered:

Gifted & Talented

The Gifted & Talented program focuses on the issues of teaching and learning from the perspective of the practicing classroom teacher who is interested in teaching and/or designing programs for gifted and talented students. Students are provided with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to enhance student learning, and to increase their effectiveness as teachers and leaders in the field of gifted and talented education. The program addresses research, theory, and best practices related to removing barriers to student achievement, learning environment, school culture, and educational reform. Translating theory into practice is a primary emphasis. The MEd Gifted program is designed to produce educators who will identify and resolve common and potential legal/ethical issues related to gifted and talented education.

Math Specialist

The Math Specialist focus transforms teachers into leaders with strong preparation and background in mathematics content, instructional strategies, and school leadership in the Pre-K through grade 6 setting. Mathematics Specialists are responsible for supporting the professional growth of their colleagues and promoting enhanced mathematics instruction and student learning throughout their schools. They are responsible for strengthening classroom teachers' understanding of mathematics content while designing approaches to improve student achievement and instruction.

National Board

The National Board concentration is tailor-made for teachers seeking their MEd while preparing for the National Board Certification. Teachers know the specific subjects that they teach as well as, how to teach those subjects effectively to students. Additionally, they are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning, and are committed to their students and their learning. Teachers, who are considering the National Board concentration, think systematically about their practice and learn from experience, they are often members of learning communities. The UC MEd National Board degree program is founded on many leadership qualities including truth, efficiency, community, professionalism, democracy, excellence, integrity, and progress.

Reading

The Reading Specialist focus ensures that licensed teachers receive the knowledge and skills needed to support students who display different types of literacy development as well as from differing cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Teachers enrolled in the UC MEd program will be prepared to use a wide variety of assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading instruction and to offer key strategies to create a literate environment that fosters reading and writing. The program is designed to address the social, cultural and linguistic factors that contribute to a student's reading and writing development.

STEM

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) concentration is accessible and attractive to educators working in formal and informal settings interested in integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics across the curriculum. It prepares educators to design integrated and project based learning experiences and develops a framework for thinking about the role of STEM subjects in a democratic society.

TESOL

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) concentration is geared toward individuals who are licensed in single or multiple subject areas and are interested in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). The program is designed to meet the national TESOL standards. The aim of the program is to prepare theoretically informed and practically equipped, caring, committed, and competent ESL teachers, curriculum developers and consultants, and program administrators for domestic K-12 public and private schools.

Teacher Leader

The Teacher Leader concentration is designed for those active classroom teachers who are interested in assuming a leadership role and added responsibility within their school (or building) but do not aspire to become a principal. The Teacher Leader curriculum prepares ambitious classroom teachers to inform curriculum decisions and learning strategies in their grade level or subject area, while also equipping them with the coaching skills necessary to act as leaders and influence their peers to be better teachers. The program strives to develop reflective educators who can be change agents in the lives of their students, in their school, and facilitate learning communities for all stakeholders.

  • Three letters of recommendation - sealed, dated and signed
  • Application to the Graduate School and the Department
  • Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work
  • Resume of personal, professional and educational background
  • Written statement of applicant's professional and academic goals
  • GRE scores: all three sections of the test taken within the last five years
  • International Applicants: must have a minimum TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 (paper version) or 190 (electronic version)

There is a one-time application fee of $40. The tuition is $399* per credit hour.
